Assistive Devices

Assistive Device

Access to assistive devices such as wheelchairs are severely limited in South Africa, although the state does supply wheelchairs to those who qualify. Other devices such as voice-activated software and hand controls for vehicles are still a luxury for the majority of South African quadriplegics and paraplegics. .

QASA lobbies constantly for the relevant government departments to make assistive devices more readily available, as this is a key factor in improving the standard of living of people with disabilities.

QASA has established an Assistive Devices fund which will consider requests for any kind of assistive device for any QASA member. The project has some strategic and essential partners who assist in the provision of funding of devices and mobility aids. QASA serves on the Thabo Mbkei Development Trust Assistive Devices Committee.

Any person making a request must do so n writing to their regional QuadPara Association, which will forward the request to the QASA National office. Persons with Disabilities who are employed may apply to the Thabo Mbeki Development Trust for Assistive Devices.
